100+ Volunteers Help Plant Dune Grass

Surfers’ Environmental Alliance was happy to be part of a 100 plus volunteer event that took place on December 5th in Sea Bright. Local Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, students from The Ranney School, Christian Brothers Academy, Shore Regional High School, Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School, local garden clubs members, members of Seabrighters Embracing Action, as well as many others, successfully planted 25,000 culms of dune grass. The collaborative efforts of these volunteers covered three and a half miles of Sea Bright beach. The event was organized by the members of Sea Bright’s Dune Committee and Councilman John Lamia.

The planted culms will mature and capture moving sand from wind which will result in the dunes growing over time. Sand dunes protect inland areas from coastal water intrusion. Sand dunes are able to absorb the energy from coastal storms and act as a resilient barrier against the force of waves and wind.
