Kellee Byard 2017-2018 Academic Year SEA Scholarships Recipient

Surfers’ Environmental Alliance awards two different academic scholarships each year.  It’s always nice to hear from our recipients. Here is what one of our 2017-2018 recipients, Kellee Byard, is up to now! For more on our scholarships go to www.seasurfer.org/sea-scholarships.

“I had a wonderful first year at the University of Michigan. I declared my major in the Program in the Environment (PitE) pretty soon after coming to campus, and signed up to go to Camp Davis in Wyoming not too long after. I joined a community service organization called Circle K, and became part of the Environment committee they have. I helped set up service projects related to the environment, especially with our Campus Farm. Almost every Friday I would go to the Campus Farm and help them with tasks from harvesting spinach to planting microgreens. My second semester of college I became a member of the executive board on Circle K. I also went on an alternative spring break trip to James River State Park in Virginia, where I and other members of Circle K helped build and maintain trails. It was an amazing experience to manipulate nature to help others enjoy it themselves. I also took a couple of classes pertaining specifically to my PitE major, such as global environmental history and an environmental business class. Finally, I will soon embark on my journey to Wyoming to spend one month at Camp Davis to learn about earth and environmental sciences!

Thank you so much again for the scholarship, it has allowed me to expand my horizons at school and truly explore many different opportunities! I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
